✨ Finish What You Start — Week 2
The Lie of Creative Discipline (And What You Actually Need Instead)
Hey friend,
It's week 2 in our Finish What You Start series. Last week in this series, we reframed the problem: Your project isn’t the issue; your system is.
(If you missed that, click here to catch up.)
Today, we’re unpacking one of the biggest myths that keeps creatives stuck:
💬 “I just need to be more disciplined.”
If you’ve ever felt behind, unfocused, or inconsistent, you’ve probably blamed it on a lack of discipline.
We’re taught that if we could just push harder, get stricter, or “stay focused,” we’d finally finish what we started.
I used to believe this too.
It seems like every productivity guru swears that a color-coded, time-blocked calendar, one that details every minute of your day, is the secret to success.
But every time I tried it, it backfired.
Instead of feeling focused, I felt stressed out because inevitably, something unexpected would happen and I’d get off track.
Then came the guilt, the pressure, and the shame spiral of not being able to keep up with the perfect plan.
Instead of feeling more productive, I felt broken.
That’s when I realized:
🧠 Discipline isn’t the solution. Design is.
You don’t need to force yourself into routines that feel like punishment.
You need a system that invites you to show up and actually makes it easier to keep going.
That means:
- Supportive structure, not strict routines.
- Simple, tiny actions, not endless to-do lists.
- Space to slow down, reflect, and adjust, not shame yourself when life gets lifey.
I've worked in the productivity space for 10+ years. I’ve tried every “discipline trick” in the book.
But things only changed when I started designing my workflow around how I actually function, not how I thought I should.
You are not broken.
When the system is clear, supportive, and sustainable, follow-through becomes a practice, not a punishment.
✨ Your tiny action for the week:
Think of one way your current system (or lack of one) makes it harder for you to follow through. What would feel simpler or more supportive?
That insight is a breadcrumb toward the kind of creative progress that sticks.
Dream big and act boldly,
—Monique
